WILLIAM F. SCHLEY
Bill Schley was born in the San Francisco Bay area and lived in the East Bay for over 20 years. He graduated Moreau High School
in Hayward, Calif. In 1971. He lost his eyesight to diabetic complications in early 1981. Bill served twice as a missionary,
in Milwaukee, Wisconsin from 1975-77, and in New Orleans, Louisiana from 1982-83. He settled in Reno in 1983, where he has
since made his permanent home.
He owns his own snack vending business through the Blind Enterprises of Nevada program. He has also authored two books used
in Nevada schools. "Forecasting" is about weather forecasting, its importance to our lives, and covers the origins of the
science and business of weather forecasting.
His second book, "Discoverers of the Silver State," a history of Nevada's exploration, is slated for publication in early
2006.
In July 2004 Bill and Benny attended the first Endgame Writers Conference in Carson City, Nevada. Bill was among 20 aspiring
fiction writers who submitted samples of their novels for consideration by Michael Larsen and his wife, Elizabeth Pomada,
who comprise the Larsen-Pomada Literary Agency in San Francisco.
(WWW.LARSENPOMADA.COM.) His novel "Clancy's World" was the sole novel accepted by Elizabeth Pomada for representation. Fall
and winter of 2005-06.
Bill will dedicate his free time to biblical studies and to finishing the novel.
Bill has been a professional writer since 1998. He has served on the board of directors for the Unnamed Writers' Group in
Reno for over three years. He also serves on the Nevada Committee of Blind Vendors and has directed publicity and training
sub-committees for the NCBV.
His favorite charities are Guide Dogs of America, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, and his church.
Bill and his current guide dog, Benny, a handsome black
Labrador, enjoy meeting with classes, Scout troops, church groups, and other fraternal and young peoples' groups to discuss
independent blind life and travel, and all aspects
of living with a guide dog. He serves as a lay minister with a local non-denominational Bible research group. He has taught
the Bible, led Christian fellowships, ran biblical research classes, and spoken publicly for over 30 years.
Bill attended Chabot Community College and Cal State University at Hayward, California.
Bill's interests include big game hunting, fishing, biblical research, drums, live jazz and most other genres of music, collecting
fine cutlery, fossil hunting, cooking, baking, and writing fiction. In 1987 he became the first blind person to successfully
hunt a pronghorn antelope with a specially adapted scope system, the Zenz-Lenz, mounted on his high power rifle.
His computer is equipped with a screen reader that allows him to hear information announced by a synthesized human
voice.
Future considerations for Bill and Benny include further in-depth biblical study of the authority and power available in the
name of Jesus Christ, producing Christian fiction, and expansion of Bill's publication into larger markets.
Bill enjoys public speaking and with his taste for adventure and new experiences his lectures always entertain and even astonish
audiences. After each public appearance Bill and Benny enjoy an informal meet & greet with audience members. Please contact
Bill at least 3 weeks in advance of speaking dates. Transportation for Bill and Benny to and from speaking venues is greatly
appreciated. For all venues outside of the Reno, Nevada area, overnight lodging to accommodate Bill and his guide dog and
meal per diem are required. Bill does not charge schools or fraternal and church groups for presentations.
